You hear it all the time, "you can find running backs anywhere" or "why take a running back that high in the draft?" or even my favorite " we're running a West Coast Offense, we don't need a RB". Well let me tell you "why" the Browns made the right decision in Trent Richardson.
Currently in the NFL, half the teams that run the WCO finished in the top 10 in rushing last year, with 5 of them making the play-offs. So that argument is no longer valid.
Trent Richardson is arguably the strongest RB to ever come out of the draft. With his ridiculous amount of strength and toughness, you can't ignore how soft and valuable his hands are going to be as well.Whether he's thrown an out route or forced right up the middle, anytime he touches the ball you know he's going forward. And as Browns fans I don't think we care as long as we get in the end-zone more than once a game.
Being 5'9" is also not a disadvantage, but an advantage if you ask me. Being able to hide behind the mammoth offensive tackles will work in his favor to sneak in and out of holes and defenders. Maurice Jones-Drew led the NFL in rushing last year with 1,606 yds. Just over 100 yds a game and stands only 5'7". (but he could do without the Lebron powder toss after scoring a TD last year in CLE).
I truly believe Trent Richardson is the future of the Cleveland Browns and that's why we made sure nobody else got him but us. I'll even go as far as saying I think he could lead the league in rushing next season. Now I do realize this is the Browns we're talking about, probably the team with the worst "luck" in all of sports. But Browns fans, it's time for a change.
We were really good at one point and every team goes through its stages. Maybe it's time for the Ravens and Steelers to slowly begin their downfall, and the Ohio teams to take over the AFC North. Who knows? But I do know one thing, and that's if our "luck" doesn't come into play, Trent Richardson is the real deal. And maybe the Browns aren't too far away from being the same.
Go Browns!
