Cleveland Browns vs Pittsburgh Steelers: Eric Manginis last Game as a Browns Coach?

By Joe Hunley--Cleveland Browns Report

The Cleveland Browns will be hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers this coming Sunday after a dismal performance against the Baltimore Ravens last week. Watching the Ravens dominate the Browns last Sunday, one can only expect the Steelers to leave Cleveland with the AFC North division crown.

With a loss to Pittsburgh, the Browns will finish with a record of 5 wins and 11 losses, identical to the 2009 season. The Browns have been in several close games this season that were decided by fewer than 7 points, leading many to suggest that the Browns have improved over last season.

It would be nice if the NFL handed out trophies for improving, however at this time, trophies are given to those who win.

Eric Mangini, coach of the Browns, opened up the "bag of tricks", and coached an offensive attack on New England, New Orleans and the New York Jets. This style of coaching yielded the Browns victories over the Saints, Patriots and sent the Browns into overtime, with a loss to the Jets. After watching the Browns attack the defenses' of these teams with trickery, imagination and a high level of intensity, one could only imagine how effective this would be against weaker teams. We'll never know.

This style of play would be cast aside when facing a one win team like the Carolina Panthers. Playing "close to the vest", and what many consider playing not to lose, the Browns would defeat the Panthers--correction--the Panthers beat themselves with a missed field goal.

The Browns would then meet a two win team, the Buffalo Bills, and once again play an ultra-conservative offensive game plan. Fourth and Goal on the one yard line, and Mangini opts for a field goal. Given Hillis' effectiveness on short yardage, and the tone that would have been set by the Browns scoring a touchdown on the opening drive, I think Mangini just likes field goals.

Another two win team--Cincinnati Bengals--Browns trailing 16 to 7, and Mangini opts for a field goal on 4th down on the Bengals 5 yard line.

The Browns after winning against NE, NO and a fight to the finish against the Jets, would go into their shell against teams with two or less wins, losing against two of those teams, and barely escaping the other.

Mike Holmgren, team president, will have a lot to think about regarding Eric Mangini.

It is possible that the Browns have found the quarterback that they have been lacking so many years, a quarterback named Colt McCoy. Given Manginis' run first mentality, can he develop a young quarterback to be an effective offensive weapon.

Holmgren is considered a "Quarterback Guru", and is deeply entrenched in the West-coast Offense, while Mangini is more defensive minded. Will Holmgren trust Mangini to develop Colt McCoy?

It would seem that when two people, from two different schools of thought meet--something has to give.

Given Manginis' inconsistent play-calling, the differences between Mangini and Holmgrens approaches to the game, and another 5 and 11 record, I do see something giving.

I like Eric Mangini, believe he can be a good coach in the right system, however, I think Sunday is his last game as a Cleveland Brown Head Coach.
