Browns’ defensive coordinator Ryan in hunt for Panthers coach

Wire Reports 11:12 PM Wednesday, January 5, 2011

As expected, the Carolina Panthers are courting Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in their search for a coach. The Panthers have asked the Browns for permission to interview Ryan, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Last week, Ryan said he would “be really shocked” if he didn’t interview for a head coaching job. Several players also expressed confidence in Ryan’s chances of taking control of an NFL team.
“I would be lying to you if I said (Ryan) wasn’t ready to be a head coach,” Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown said. “I definitely know he’s ready to be a head coach.”
Browns President Mike Holmgren said the team’s list of candidates includes college coaches. Stanford University’s Jim Harbaugh is one of the more high-profile coaches from the college ranks, but he reportedly is not interested in working for the Browns. Harbaugh interviewed with the 49ers on Wednesday.
