McCoy struggled last season due to numerous reasons, many pointing out the lack of a running-game, receivers dropping the ball, protection problems and of course McCoys questionable performance. Even though McCoy had a less than spectacular season the Browns brain trust was quick to throw support his way prior to the draft, stating that McCoy was the starter and yes, they felt he could be "the guy"--this has changed!
Tom Heckert, on if Weeden is the guy at quarterback for the Browns: "Yes, in our opinion he is. We took the kid at 22nd in the draft, we are hoping he is."
Yes, one can expect such a statement in support of a quarterback chosen in the first round along with Shurmurs input when questioned about the Browns scoring touchdowns, something seldom seen last season.
Pat Shurmur, on how Weeden is going to help score touchdowns: "If we don't hand it to Trent then we are going to have Brandon throw it in there. I don't mean to make a joke out of it, but he has displayed the ability to get his team in the end zone and win games. We all know the importance of the quarterback position and making sure that we address it to the point where we have the guy that we think is our guy as we move forward. That's why we want him here."
"We are going to have Brandon throw it in there", sounds like the annual QB controversy in Cleveland is unfolding, however such a contest can be eliminated simply by making a trade. This is something they will talk about today or tomorrow!
Tom Heckert, on if they tried trading Colt McCoy this weekend: "To be honest we haven't thought about that, we really haven't. I am not trying to elude it. That will be something that we will talk about tonight and tomorrow."
Colt McCoy can easily become the "odd man out" in the Browns QB situation and given Mike Holmgrens previous statements about QB controversy's, drafting a QB in the first round along with statements made following the first round of the draft it seems imminent.
Drafting running-back Trent Richardson was a major step in the attempt to improve an otherwise dysfunctional Browns offense and hopefully Heckert and Shurmur are correct that Weedon can be "the guy". One can only hope that if the Browns do trade McCoy that Weedon is that guy and that the Browns didn't jump to quickly and trade "the guy"--that being Colt McCoy!
