The Cleveland Browns have a “unique opportunity” in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The 2012 NFL draft is less than 48 hours away. All the study and homework on each prospect has now been completed and each player has been ranked. And if you believe everything you hear or read, the Cleveland Browns may be in a unique position. With two picks in the first round (4th and 22nd overall), the Browns could be the first team to ever draft a quarterback, and wide receiver from the same college/university in the first round. That dynamic duo in question is WR Justin Blackmon, and QB Brandon Weeden from Oklahoma State.

When you look at the numbers, there have been 48 different circumstances in which a school’s quarterback and (at least one) receiver from the same school have been drafted in the same year since 2000. One example of this would be WR Ted Guinn Jr. and QB Troy Smith. Both were drafted in the 2007 NFL draft from Ohio State. (As a side note Guinn and Smith are the only QB/WR combo to connect on a pass in high school, college, and the NFL) Even rarer than a QB/WR combo being taken in the same draft is a QB/WR combo going in the first round. Since 2000 this has only happened once. In 2007 JaMarcus Russell (Raiders), Dwayne Bowe (Chiefs) and Craig Davis (Chargers) all came out of LSU and all were drafted in the first round.

There have even been former College team-mates that have wound up on the same NFL team such as Jay Cutler/Earl Bennett, Rex Grossman/Jabar Gaffney, and Troy Smith/Ted Guinn Jr, but all of these players were drafted by different teams (and in some cases, different years) before they ended up afterwards as NFL teammates.

Weeden, and Blackmon aren’t the only QB/WR combos looking to go in the first round this year. Both Robert Griffin III, and Kendall Wright (both from Baylor) will more than likely be drafted in the first round. But unlike Washington who is taking RG3, the Browns have two 1st round picks. The Redskins won’t have another first round pick again until 2015.

So will the Brows pick up both Blackmon, and Weeden? All we can do is sit and watch Friday night to find out. If you were Tom Heckert, would you?
