The Browns and the 2012 Supplemental Draft

The Cleveland Browns and the Supplemental Draft, another chance for improvement? The NFL Supplemental Draft for 2012 will be held on July 12th. Players entering Supplemental Drafts usually are players that have what many consider to be "issues", such as academic and character issues, however on occasion a player may have graduated to late to declare for the regular draft. As of now the only player throwing his hat into the ring is Ed Wesley, running-back from Texas Christian University, but Adam Caplan suggests there could be more.

So, how does the Supplemental Draft work? Teams use next years draft picks as their "bidding price" if interested in a player, with the team bidding the highest pick receiving the rights to that player. The team will then forfeit their "bid" in the following years draft. The team with the highest draft slot wins in case of a tiebreaker.

Can "diamonds in the rough" be found in the Supplemental Draft? In the history of the Supplemental Draft Cleveland has only chosen one player--Bernie Kosar, who the Browns forfeited their first round pick in 1985 to acquire--a good investment! Only one player has petitioned for the upcoming draft leaving the Browns to sit and wait to see who, if any will possibly enter that could be of interest to Cleveland--a possible upgrade.

Who is Ed Wesley and would the Browns be interested, if at the right price?

Wesley, at 5'9" and 200 pounds runs a 40 time of 4.46 and has been known to run a 4.35 was considered a late or possibly a mid-round pick. Late season he carried the ball 120 times yielding 726 yards with 6 touchdowns, that is an average of 6.1 per carry. In three seasons he has 21 touchdowns, 2,442 yards on 387 carries-6.3 yards per carry. As always there is a downside, Wesley had a shoulder injury last season that sidelined him for three games.

Although the Browns have Trent Richardson and multiple running-backs at their disposal should they take a look at Wesley--provided the price is right?
