The supplemental draft has come and gone and the Cleveland Browns grabbed what could be considered a steal or bust in the second round with their selection of Baylor receiver Josh Gordon. Gordon is a big target at 6-foot-3 224 who ran a 4.52 40-yard dash time on Baylor’s pro day. However Gordon may find himself competing for playing time in a crowded, but questionable receiving corps.
Obviously overshadowed by Baylor’ stand-outs QB Robert Griffin III, and WR Kendall Wright, Gordon did not receive much attention due to his suspension from the team last season due to NCAA violations. He had the unfortunate pleasure of watching (not playing) in one of Baylor’s best seasons as they went 10-3 and the QB RGIII winning the Heisman Trophy.
Taking Gordon in the 2nd round of the supplemental draft means that Cleveland will lose their 2nd round pick in next April’s 2013 NFL Draft, so a lot is riding on him considering the talent that Cleveland could have had to pursue in the 2nd round next season.
Gordon only has one full season of experience due to last year’s suspension, but in that year he snagged 42 receptions for 714 yards and 7 touchdowns including a whopping 17 yard average per reception.
Cleveland has high hopes for Gordon forfeiting such a high pick in next season’s draft and they are expecting him to possibly start right away.
"We hope he comes in and plays right away," Browns general manager Tom Heckert told reporters in a conference call on Thursday. "That's the goal. Obviously, we'll see him here in a couple weeks, but a lot will have to depend on how he picks things up ... but, yeah, we expect him to play."
Heckert also spoke of Gordon as a high caliber player which justified the gamble.
"Anytime you pick somebody that early, you're hoping he's a good football player, and that's what we think Josh is," Heckert said. "... Most years, there's not a player of Josh's caliber in the supplemental draft, so you don't hear about it very much. But we look at it as a positive. We're getting a really good football player and we're getting him a year early."
It is far too early to tell but the selection of Gordon will spell trouble for receivers such as Carlton Mitchell, Rod Winsor, Owen Spencer, Jermaine Safford, Bert Reed, and Josh Cooper who all are battling for a spot on the Browns final 53 man roster.
But the real question is will this selection satisfy those critics who say that Cleveland has not done enough to improve its receiver corps for rookie QB Brandon Weeden? Only time will tell but Cleveland took a risk on another suspended receiver in 2011’s draft named Greg Little, and that seems to be working out well.
