Many believe Wallace has "job security" due to his past relationship with team president Mike Holmgren, even tho' Wallace would be a high priced QB to be sitting as backup to the backup. But then head coach Pat Shurmur thinks highly of Lewis from what he saw in St. Louis before arriving in Cleveland. His quote (from the Plain Dealer) about the acquisition of Lewis last season:
"He's a guy that we will try to develop and get him ready to play," said Shurmur. "That's what you do with backup quarterbacks. You try to develop them first into a dependable backup and then hopefully to a guy that can maybe start. He came to St. Louis as an undrafted free agent, and then he actually did a terrific job. I've watched him, I worked with him a year ago, and then I watched him in the preseason. He executed and played well, and I think he's a guy that we want to try and develop."
Lewis, a four-year letterman at Duke at 6' 2" displayed uncanny accuracy in both of his preseasons, completing 78.6 percent of his passes in 2010 and 71.6 percent last year. At Duke, he also showed good mobility, rushing for 621 yards and nine TDs.
It is doubtful that the Browns will enter the regular season with four quarterbacks and provided McCoy is still on the roster as backup to Weeden, do the Browns keep Wallace a high priced third stringer or take a chance on a project, a project few ever talk about?
