It took a few months, but the Cleveland Browns have finally secured terms with their 1st round draft picks. Both running back Trent Richardson and quarterback Brandon Weeden came to terms with the club this week.
Trent Richardson agreed to a deal according to a source with knowledge of the situation on Monday. The four-year contract is reportedly worth $20.4 million all of which is guaranteed. In addition Richardson will also receive a signing bonus worth $13.6 million.
The standout running back selected 3rd overall in Aprils draft from Alabama will be expected to make an immediate impact on a Cleveland Browns offense that required an MRI to ensure it was at the very least alive if not moving the football. Richardson will make an immediate impact in the backfield and is expected to be the centerpiece of the Browns offensive scheme.
As luck would have it the Browns were later able to come to terms with their 22nd selection Oklahoma State universities quarterback Brandon Weeden on Tuesday. Once again a source with knowledge of the situation says Weeden’s deal is worth $8.1 million with guaranteed funds in the final year of his four-year deal although exact figures have yet to be confirmed.
The biggest bonus here is that two of the key components of the Cleveland Browns hope for 2012 will be in camp on time and ready to go. Weeden especially could use all the snaps he can get in order to develop chemistry with his new receiver corps including newest addition supplemental 2nd round draft pick from Baylor wide out Josh Gordon who many hope will start right away. Gordon could have gone in the original draft in April but a yearlong suspension due to NCAA substance violations kept him from participating in Baylor’s best season in years.
Many also believe that the fate of Weeden will also be the fate of Team President Mike Holmgren. If Weeden is the savior of the franchise then Holmgren will go down as the man who helped turn around an ailing franchise. If he fails like the 20 other quarterbacks since Bernie Kosar it is possible Holmgren will be yet another unemployed NFL executive.
Let’s hope it works out and the deals being done on time benefits everyone involved.
Writers note: With Richardson and Weeden agreeing to terms with the club all eleven of the Browns 2012 Draft picks, all 14 undrafted free agents, and supplemental draft Pick Josh Gordon will all be signed and will be reporting to camp on time which starts on July 26th. To this point, no holdouts are expected.
